Welcome to Reception Class

We aim to provide a wonderful learning environment for all the children in the Foundation Stage, that is full of care, fun and excitement .We believe in building a strong relationship with parents and carers to ensure every child has the best start to their education.

We have lots opportunities for learning through play in both our EYFS indoor and outdoor environments.  Every day we have a mixture of adult led and child initiated activities, which have all been provided to allow the children to extend their individual learning…..

Within the construction, we make amazing structures; investigate shapes, measures and balance.

The role play area, where we can take on all sorts of different roles using our imagination.

Our craft area, where we can build, paint and make lots of exciting creations, developing our individual ideas.

Our writing area - we love developing our mark making skills through making books, drawing, sending letters, and writing lists, making cards... all using our emerging skills.

Our maths area, where we can explore number challenges, develop counting skills and investigate measures and shapes.

We also love spending time in our outdoor area, creating structures, playing with sand and water, developing mark making skills and role play - to name but a few activities.

We are always very busy!

All children attending  St Barnabas  C of E Primary School will have a personal on-line Learning Journey which records photos, observations and comments, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage, to build up a record of your child’s experiences during their time in Reception class.

We use  ‘2 simple- to build a profile’, a system, which is hosted in the UK on secure servers. You will have secure access (via email address and password) to your child’s Learning Journey and, in addition to viewing our contributions; we encourage you to add to it by uploading photos and comments, or commenting on observations made by us.

More information can be found at or please do not hesitate to ask.

Phonics and Reading

We continuously encourage children to read for pleasure to enable them to become confident readers and have many opportunities within class. To begin with we will assess the children during the first few weeks in school (baseline assessment) to see what they already know and from there we will start our daily phonics lessons. Once your child has started learning their sounds, we will assess their ability to blend them together to make words.  When we feel your child is ready, they will bring home a reading book. The children will need to be encouraged to sound out and blend the words in order to help them read the text.

The children will read with us in class every week.   As well as this your child will practice reading daily during their phonics lessons. We will communicate via the children’s diaries and require 3 or more comments per week from parents to let us know how your child is getting on. Please keep your child's reading book and diary in their school bag and bring them into school every day. We will change reading books once a week.

Physical Education

We have weekly PE lesson, children need to have a kit in school which is clearly labelled, a pair of blue sports shorts and a St.Barnabas t-shirt.

Children do not need black pumps in their kit.

In the summer term we ask children to bring in their trainers for outdoor activities.

Other Information

All items of uniform including shoes need to be clearly named. As we take every opportunity to be in the outdoors, each child needs their own pair of wellington boots which can be left in school. We provide waterproofs for outdoor activities but child will also require a coat in school on a daily basis.

It is also helpful if children have some spare underwear and socks in their PE bag in case of accidents.

Children receive a healthy snack each day which consists of a variety of healthy food including cheese, wraps, yogurts. There is a cost of £8.00 per half term, just over a 20p a day. Parents pay via ParentPay

The children can chose milk or water and also receive free fruit in the afternoon. Children need to have a clearly labelled water bottle in school each day.
