Reading in Reception

Reading in Reception Class

In EYFS, we continue to build on the positive experiences the children have had at home and in their pre-school settings with books and reading. Reading, sharing and telling stories is embedded within the curriculum. Children take part in oral storytelling through our whole school approach,Talk for Writing.

Reading is also available as one of our Choose-and-Learn activities both indoor and outside. . A range of fiction and non-fiction books are available and changed on a regular basis.  Groups of children and the whole class listen to, and join in with the reading and telling of high quality literature every day.

Within the first few days of starting school, pupils engage in activities and games that improve their listening skills.  Using the ‘Letters & Sounds’ phonics scheme as our planning tool, our phonics lessons are interactive and packed with a range of individual and group activities based around a range of activities so that phonics teaching is embedded within the wider context of reading.

Letter sounds or phonemes are taught as pure sounds, so we pronounce the sound not the letter name. Click on the link for an example.

Reading at Home

During the year your child will have the opportunity to access a range of home reading opportunities.

Library Books

The school Library books allow you and your child the opportunity to share book together which they have chosen in school.

Library books will be chosen on a Friday, sent home then returned on a Tuesday.

Traditional Reading Books

We will be started a phased introduction of reading books based on the teaching of phonics in class over the coming weeks. All children will start at Lilac level. Lilac level includes wordless picture books that encourage young children to tell their own stories. At this level, children are beginning to discover books and developing their core speaking and listening skills.

Over the year the children will progress through the reading scheme alongside the teaching of phonics, tricky  and high frequency words.

Books will be sent home on a Wednesday and returned on a Tuesday
